On 8th March, 1916, 16th Rifle Brigade arrived in France as part of 117 Brigade, 39th Division and spent their first few months in the Givenchy and Festubert sectors of the front line. Relieved from front line duties on 6th August, 1916, 16th Rifle Brigade moved back to Bethune and billets in the Ecole des Jeune Filles. The next day, 7th August, Bethune was shelled by a large 38 cm gun for about four hours causing damage to the buildings there and over one hundred civilian and military casualties. Four men from 16th Rifle Brigade were killed in this shelling. One of them was William Kirk. |
